mastering poses, the peaceful breathing exercises. The clarity I would walk out of the Fire Shaper class with was intoxicating. My passion has been growing ever since. It truly encompasses my life and I want to share my passion more than anything I’ve ever wanted on this earth.
With this Fire Shaper scholarship, I intend to bring back the the core values of yoga such as connecting the mind, body, and spirit. With its recent growth in western culture, the practice seems to have lost this purpose. While people are focused only on the physical results, I would remind them of these central values, reinforcing that if they are patient and listen to their bodies, the possibilities are endless. I do not want to simply teach the asanas of yoga. I would like to show people that if the breath, mind, and body all work together in perfect harmony, they have the power to manifest balance and happiness in the yogi’s life.
I believe that the only reason a person does not fall in love with the practice of yoga is that they just have not been to the right class. If granted this Fire Shaper scholarship, I will be sure to be that right class. Yoga’s growing popularity has provided an abundance of classes and an experimenting student may not always find himself in the appropriate class. Starting from the beginning is important. Just like with anything else, yoga builds on the basics. Learning the proper foundation can make a world of difference. Also, for those who say they don’t enjoy yoga, I want to understand why and fix it. Many people say “it’s too slow for me”, “I’m not flexible enough”, “I’m too embarrassed”. I want to show people the importance of being still and enjoying the moment they are in RIGHT NOW, as well as the fact that flexibility is gained through practice, not given through luck of the draw and that growth will never come from fear.
I am about to graduate from Rutgers University with a degree in Exercise Science and Applied Kinesiology. I have been working throughout my entire college career to try to make ends meet. Receiving this Fire Shaper scholarship would mean the world to me, and it would help guide me towards accomplishing my dream. I want to go to Physical Therapy school, and then get my Masters in Yoga Therapy. NOW is my time, I can feel it. Vote for me because my passion courses through my veins, and I want to pass that on. I want to change someone’s life with yoga. Voting begins the day of my college graduation. If that’s not a sign to start the beginning of the rest of my life with yoga, then I don’t know what is.
